The blind spot in travel policies

A short assignment can carry significant risks

A trip of a few days exposes an employee to the same unexpected events as expatriation: accidents, emergency hospitalisation and medical evacuation. Yet cover is most often arranged on an ad hoc basis for these short assignments.

The employer's duty of care has no minimum duration. careXpat structures group insurance and assistance policies: all your employees are covered, every departure is protected, and your HR teams no longer need to manage each case individually.

90 days
The limit of travel policies

Beyond 90 consecutive days, most travel benefits, including bank card cover, cease to apply.

€155,000
The bank card limit

The medical expenses limit on a Visa Premier or Gold Mastercard, subject to conditions. A hospital stay in the United States can use it up in a few days.

Frequently asked questions

Is business travel insurance compulsory for an employee on assignment?
No legislation requires a policy specifically called 'business travel insurance', but the employer's duty of care (Article L4121-1 of the French Labour Code) applies from the first day of an assignment abroad. In the event of an accident, an employer may be found to have committed inexcusable fault under civil law, resulting in an increased pension and additional compensation for the employee. Breaches of health and safety rules carry a separate criminal penalty. Assignment insurance and assistance cover is the safest way to meet this obligation.
Is my employees' bank card insurance enough for an assignment abroad?
No. Premium bank card insurance generally caps medical expenses at €155,000, applies deductibles and excludes many work-related situations. It covers neither assignments lasting more than 90 days nor certain destinations, and gives the employer no central oversight. A hospital stay in the United States alone can exceed these limits in a few days.
Business trip, posting, expatriation: how does insurance differ?
A business trip is an occasional work-related visit during which the employee remains affiliated with French social security: a group travel insurance and assistance policy is sufficient. Travel benefits generally end after 90 consecutive days. Beyond that, the arrangement falls under posting, limited to 24 months in the European Union, and then expatriation, which require dedicated group international health insurance.
How does an annual multi-trip policy work?
The company declares an estimated number of travel days for the year. All employees are automatically covered when they leave on assignment, without having to name them in advance. An adjustment is made at year-end based on the days actually travelled. This is the simplest option for companies whose teams travel regularly.
What happens in a medical emergency during an assignment?
The employee or company contacts the assistance platform, available in French 24/7. It arranges referral to a suitable facility, direct payment of hospital costs without an upfront payment and, if the patient's condition requires it, medically assisted repatriation to France.
Does a business visa require an insurance certificate?
Several countries, including Algeria, Russia, China, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, require an insurance certificate stating minimum levels of cover before issuing a visa or allowing entry. Requirements vary by consulate and visa type: check them before each departure. careXpat group policies allow compliant individual certificates to be issued.
